Q&A with Ms. Kanchan

Tell us about your experience working with young children?

When I was growing up, I was always taking care of the younger kids in the family. Later, I went to boarding school, where I also helped care for the kids in younger grades—so I was really drawn to children right away! After I graduated from school, I taught second grade and worked as a social worker with low-income, at risk youth in India. Then, I had two children of my own, and I wanted to make sure they received a high-quality education. I also wanted to keep working in child care, so I decided I could achieve both goals by opening my own program in my home. It was a great decision—I love teaching the children in my program and supporting local families. I feel very lucky that I was able to discover my passion at such a young age and dedicate my entire life to working with young children! Being around kids motivates me to work harder every day. No other job can give you that.

What are the key areas of focus at your daycare?

We have daily schedules and goals. We do circle time, arts and crafts, writing, songs—and we love playing outside. As a teacher, integrating education into our days is very important to me, so I’m always working in different learning opportunities. For example, we do science experiments (like getting caterpillars and watching them transform into butterflies!), and I like to incorporate different languages into our lessons and songs to celebrate other cultures. My favorite activity is actually doing puzzles with the children. It’s fun, educational, practices hand-eye coordination, and is a great opportunity to be on their level and connect with them. Of course, circle time is also special, when I get to know each one of them personally. I think parents often have the idea that a high-quality child care program has to have a lot of fancy equipment. But the value of the program is really in the educators themselves. I am a professional teacher, and I draw on decades of experience when running my program. There’s a lot that goes into teaching and child care that isn’t always obvious at first glance, and it definitely isn’t as simple as having the latest toys or technology.

Can you tell us a bit about your home environment?

Our program is located in the spacious and cheery first floor of my home. We have designated areas for our various centers—arts and crafts, circle time, reading, puzzles—a sun room, and a big back yard for playing games. Healthy eating is also a priority, so we always eat whole, nutritious foods around our little snack and meal table.

Here’s the inside scoop from other parents that have worked with Ms. Kanchan.

Kate has worked with my daughter for over a year now. Kate impressed me right away, she has a great curriculum and a very clean program. She has been very flexible and if there are any concerns or suggestions for our daughter, she will tell us right away. She listens to my daughter and makes sure she is getting what she needs. My daughter initially worked with a language therapist and Kate was amazing at making sure she was getting the attention she needed to reach her goals. Kate is very sweet and I am very happy to have my daughter in her program. My daughter has grown so much while working with Kate!

I would recommend Kate to anyone. Every child she works with absolutely loves her, my son can't wait to get in the car to go to her program and it is always a hard time getting him to leave. Kate treats our son like her own child, and knows exactly what children need. She knows when my son isn't feeling well and how to make him feel better before I call any doctor! Through Kate's help and guidance he can now speak in four languages! She runs a very active program where the children are always playing outside. My son used to be shy, and now he is learning new words everyday and making friends!

Kate is a wonderful teacher! The best thing about Kate is that she has a lot of activities for kids. When my 2 year old child was going there, he wasn't speaking much but since the time he started going to Tiny Footprints, he was talking a lot more than we thought. We were so glad he loved the place and didn't want to come home. Her food program is awesome too. She is licensed so I never worry about my child's safety. She is on top of everything.

My son has been going for about two months now, and I can’t say enough great things about the school! Miss Kate is just so pleasant and so helpful, always keeping the kids busy doing arts and crafts and learning new words and songs. I’m so happy my son is in her daycare because I know he’s in good hands all day!

Rates & Openings

Daycare rates depend on how old your child will be and what your schedule looks like. 5 days / week might get a slight discount, and infant rates are usually more than toddlers’. Finding a spot also depends on age and schedule because each daycare has a limited number of openings for each age range.

Let’s find a really good daycare for you

Your family is unique to you, but some of your questions might not be. 😉 Here’s what most parents want to know when starting out.

What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be - especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care - so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools - we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. Click here to start the survey.

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.

More questions? Text or email - we’re here to help.

We’re online Monday - Friday from 8am to 6pm Eastern.
