After living and working in the Boston area her entire life, Ms. Gail has opened a home daycare in Winthrop, MA. She began working with children when her own kids were born, after realizing that her search for quality child care was in vain. She couldn’t find a program that she felt comfortable with, and so she started her own. She ran her first home daycare from 1984 to 1999, when she decided to pursue a career at the YMCA working on initiatives that helped school-aged children, such as the Summer Food Programs. Gail had many roles at the YMCA related to children, including Director of Child Care and Program Executive Director for Child Development. After years of service at the YMCA, Gail stepped down to work at a daycare center where she found that her experience lent better to having her own program again. So, with the birth of her first grandchild, she opened a new home daycare in Winthrop.

“I have always been passionate about kids,” Gail says. “I love to see them learn and grow and be successful.” Gail loves also to be able to play with the children and talk to them. She firmly believes that early childhood builds the foundation of lifelong learning, and so it’s important to keep the children engaged when they’re young in order to ensure engagement as they go through school. She values her participation in that foundation and the ability to give parents a place they can send their children without worries.
It’s important to Gail that the kids learn their emotional, social, physical, and cognitive skills through play. If a child wants to individually learn something in a more academic way, she attends to their needs. Though it’s imperative to Gail that children find their own voice and interests. Gail’s favorite activities to do with the kids are arts and crafts, and going outdoors with them at least once a day. The town of Winthrop has many resources for outdoor play, such as the local Winthrop beaches and community parks, along with the Winthrop Public Library. Gail especially likes to attend events at the library with the children when they occur. She also has a big fenced-in yard where the children can experience nature.
Her home is used fully for the program, the children and her moving throughout the kitchen, living, and bed rooms depending on what activities they are doing. Her home is accessible by public transportation as well.
Gail’s most precious memories from her time working with children include when all of the kids have left her program for school emotionally, socially, and academically ready. She also values helping and supporting the parents through any challenges their children may face in their development.
Gail is excited to be partnering with NeighborSchools and to see how her daycare can grow with the attention and care that NeighborSchools devotes. “Everything is moving quickly!” Gail says, and she is ready.
Under Massachusetts law, Gail’s program has been open as a licensed home daycare through the Massachusetts’ Development of Early Education and Care (EEC) since 2019. The EEC mandates strict licensing requirements, which include background checks, home inspections, and safety trainings and certifications. By partnering with NeighborSchools, Gail will continue to receive expert advice in marketing and operating her business.
