Q&A with Ms. Marie

Tell us about your experience working with young children?

It has always been an absolute dream of mine to have my home daycare. I’ve raised my three children and have an associate, bachelor and master’s degrees in early childhood education. I did pre-practicum in preschool and kindergarten in the public schools. I started working with children as a teacher in a daycare center 4 years ago. I have so much to provide to little ones. I especially love to read books, sing and to tell stories to the children, but the truth is that so many parts of the day bring a lot of joy and fun. Through it all, I focus on allowing children to express themselves. One of the best parts of working with children is that they are all different. The work is incredibly rewarding, especially when I think about all the children I’ve helped grow and learn. It’s such a gift to guide the children in my program as they grow. I am very proud to be a part of my community. This gives me the opportunity to create the welcoming. Nurturing environment that I think is so important. I believe children learn best when they have a good relationship with their teachers. This creates a positive interaction with secure attachment that make the children feel good about themselves in their surroundings. The children learn how to play cooperatively, take turns, improve their language as they communicate with one another.  Having 2-5 years old in my program requires me to know zone of proximal development of each child in order to I use modeling, and scaffolding strategies with visual aids to support an individual child’s learning. This experience will give them unforgettable feelings of being loved that they will carry into their adulthood, and help them to build a positive relationship with others. As a teacher, of young children, I must meet goals and expectations for each child’s learning.

What are the key areas of focus at your daycare?

I believe children learn best through educational lessons that allow them to explore, so when independence is fully guaranteed they are able to make their own choices. We have meaningful goals and objectives as well as free play activities that allow children to problem solve. They use their imagination, through struggles and mistakes to see what will happen. The children find the answers to their questions and develop self-guided skills. In my program, I want parents to know that I treat all the children the same and equally by providing access to the same curriculum and materials to all. Parents and children become part of one family here. I agree with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) position on the statement responding to linguistic and cultural diversity which states that “Recommendation for working with children recognize that all children are cognitively linguistically and emotionally connected to the language and culture of their home.” I believe that diversity should be highlighted in the classroom environment by allowing individual child to make a needed adjustment while fostering the acquisition of a new language. We focus on every child’s level of knowledge in consideration with respect to the first language and cultural background. We modify the lesson to meet everyone’s learning ability and needs. Having a small group of children in my home-based program is great because I want all to look forward to coming here, and this setting makes that possible. I use my knowledge and prior experiences to adjust my program and meet individual children's needs, and I focus on exploration and imagination. We follow a daily routine that can vary according to child age and interest. Beginning with drop off and breakfast, morning meeting, most days include curriculum-based lessons and activities, free play, motor skills development, nap time and evening meeting. My favorite time is dramatic play. I love to see their personalities and interests develop and shine through.

Can you tell us a bit about your home environment?

I have dedicated the first floor of my home in Whitman to my program. The space is very comfortable and I know this becomes like a second home to many children.
I believe that children learn best in an environment that is well organized to facilitate learning and positively influence children’s behavior. My home environment displays a meaningful message in the different areas and the children become aware of what to do there without asking for help from the adult. The areas are: dramatic play, independent work, arts and crafts, science, library, Math, language, and physical area. The shelves are at the children’s level and encourage self-help skills. My environment helps the children to make good choices and let each one feels that she belongs there. There is also access to my outdoor environment which is completely surrounded by a vinyl fence.

Ms. Marie has been wonderful with my son Zack who is new to daycare. I'm a nurse and feel comfortable leaving Zack with Ms. Marie because she is well-prepared, organized, and has a warm, caring personality. It's obvious by her attentiveness that she enjoys working with kids and is excited to see Zack learn and explore. I found Ms. Marie to be the friendliest and most engaging care provider when I was searching for daycare. Zack was shy, but warmed up to her fun personality quickly. The indoor and outdoor play area is clean and spacious with engaging toys and things to look at. I highly recommend Ms. Marie.

We absolutely love Ms.Marie! She is such a fun, positive and amazing individual. She has helped my family so much and the improvements my son has made since starting is truly amazing. We are so grateful for what she does for us and I couldn’t be happier with the care that my son gets. My son loves to learn and she always keeps him occupied with new things to learn and do. She constantly gives us updates on how he is doing and how his day goes. My son loves going to daycare and having frequent communication with Ms.Marie helped us transition into putting him in daycare.

Rates & Openings

Daycare rates depend on how old your child will be and what your schedule looks like. 5 days / week might get a slight discount, and infant rates are usually more than toddlers’. Finding a spot also depends on age and schedule because each daycare has a limited number of openings for each age range.

FAQs

Your family is unique to you, but some of your questions might not be. 😉 Here’s what most parents want to know when starting out.

What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be - especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care - so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools - we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. Click here to start the survey.

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.

More questions? Text or email - we’re here to help.

We’re online Monday - Friday from 8am to 6pm Eastern.
