Q&A with Ms. April
Tell us about your experience working with young children?
There are so many stories from over the years. One that comes to mind and inspires me every day involves these two adorable sisters who joined the daycare where I was working about five years ago. They came from a foster home, the oldest was 6 and the youngest was 4, they spoke very little English. The youngest clung to me right away, always wanting to be held and seeking my love and attention. However the older immediately started to lash out and cause trouble. She would scream at nap time, tell me she was going to hurt me, and was mean to the other children as well. Every child is different, and with her I realized that the more I ignored that negative behavior, the more she learned to show me how good she could behave. It took time, but within several months she was telling me she loved me and hugging me. She was happy to see me and would share stories with me at nap time. Reflecting on the difference I made in this one child’s life made me realize that I could do this for so many others. I want to create a safe, loving, and healthy environment for all kinds of children. I hoping I help them as much as they help me!! Since these early experiences, I have worked with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers for over a decade with an emphasis on finding activities that engage a group of children and, simultaneously, create opportunities for me to pull aside each child and work with them 1:1 at some point during the day. Most recently I have worked as a licensed assistant in a Family Child Care program. Building on my experience and years of working with mixed age-ranges, I am beyond thrilled to be running my very own program. Personally, I am a mother of two great kids, ages 5 and 13. Exercise and nutrition are very important to our family, and healthy meals are a core component of my program.
What are the key areas of focus at your daycare?
From my experience working in daycares over the years, I have seen that children do better when there is some structure and routine to the day. In my home, we have a blend of both gross-motor activities and sensory / dramatic play activities. One of my favorite activities to do with the kids is actually yoga. It all started when I was at work several years ago and stretching my legs, simply because I was sore from exercising. I noticed the kids starting to imitate me. Watching how they moved their bodies in different ways and learned how to control their bodies, seemed very interesting. Since then I've researched kid-friendly yoga practices, including some fun activities like the Alphabet Poses, where we act out each letter with our bodies. For infants that can't hold the poses, they'll play in my lap and I'll help guide them towards certain movements that help them explore their limbs and bodies. It's really good healthy fun for all ages. Lastly, another key pillar of my program is centered around nutrition. I am a true believer in the importance of healthy habits, and eating healthy meals is a big part of that.
Can you tell us a bit about your home environment?
Our home offers a spacious open floorplan with a large play / activity area. At the end is my kitchen, with a table and chairs for meal-time and our arts & crafts activities. Our private backyard has a great lawn and plenty of space for outdoor activities.

He'd always be excited to see her, and I would come back to find them doing arts & crafts or some activity together, typically with April right down on the ground with him. Daycare rates depend on how old your child will be and what your schedule looks like. 5 days / week might get a slight discount, and infant rates are usually more than toddlers’. Finding a spot also depends on age and schedule because each daycare has a limited number of openings for each age range.

We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care - so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.
Is there a cost?
Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools - we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.
How do I know if I’m ready to take the survey?
Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. How do I know if a daycare has openings?
Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.
