Q&A with Ms. Madge

Tell us about your experience working with young children?

I just love children so much that I opened my family childcare 20 years ago! It is so special to see these little ones grow right before my eyes. I have such strong relationships with my families that I care for the children of kiddos that graduated my program years ago! My favorite thing about caring for children is that they all need love and care. People have said that I create an environment that is nurturing and friendly. I focus on learning through play, and I especially love to watch them express themselves. I’m proud when I think about all the children I've helped grow and learn. That's what makes this work so special

What are the key areas of focus at your daycare?

I want the children in my program to develop independence, and having a small group of children allows me to make that happen. I focus on giving children personalized attention, and I use my knowledge and prior experiences to meet individual children’s needs. I believe that kids benefit from structure, so we follow a daily schedule that has room for needed flexibility. Usually, days begin with drop-off and free play and include free play, curriculum-based lessons and activities, story time, circle time, and outdoor play. One of my favorite times of day is curriculum-based lessons and activities. It's so much fun to watch them grow. I'm so grateful to parents for trusting me with their children. I want all families to know that I'm here for them and their children.

Can you tell us a bit about your home environment?

My program takes place in the finished basement of my Mattapan home. I want the children to feel at home here, so the space is child-friendly and inviting, with designated areas for changing, reading, arts and crafts, eating, and napping. We also spend lots of time outside playing in my fenced-in yard and walking together through the quiet neighborhood.

We first learned about Auntie Madge and Papa Childcare through close friends who had sent their twins to the daycare a few years prior. We were pregnant with our first child and was just starting the childcare search. Seven years and three children later, Madge and Calvin “Papa” have become like family and we couldn’t be any happier with the service and love they provided for our three children over the years--all starting at 3 months old and left at age 3 to begin preschool. When we began our research on daycare centers and homecare providers, we were immediately impressed with Auntie Madge's space and family-like environment on our tour. All spaces were clean, organized, and well maintained. Our daughters made friends with the other children as they grew, but most importantly, they learned colors, shapes, letters, numbers and had manners--saying “please, thank you, good morning, etc.” These were all things we valued and wanted to be an extension of our own home. Our girls also ate very well. Nursing our girls was very important to our family, so I sent breastmilk with each child and Auntie Madge respected our wishes while still managing all the different needs of the other children in her care. Once it was time for solid foods our girls enjoyed home cooked meals daily. There were many afternoons our girls would cry at pick up because they just didn’t want to leave, as if they would rather stay and not come home with us--we took that as a signal that our children were well taken care of and were happy with their time at the daycare. Finding this home childcare service was such a blessing. Our last child recently left this spring, 2020, and still wants to call and talk with Auntie and Papa because she misses them so much. As new parents back in 2012, we were nervous and hoped we would find the right “fit” and a safe and welcoming space--Auntie Madge and Papa Childcare checked all the boxes and more. We would wholeheartedly recommend this childcare provider!

My daughter was a student at this daycare, I could not have chosen a better clean & child friendly environment. Each day she shared all that she learned and she enjoyed seeing her friends. Most importantly she enjoyed spending the day with Aunty Madge & Papa. Let’s just say while at work I had a peace of mind because I knew she was in a safe environment!❤️

My daughter starting a new school for the first time at two years old had me a little nervous. Papa & Auntie Madge made me feel so comfortable and my daughter as well. She loves them and actually looks forward to school everyday .

Rates & Openings

Daycare rates depend on how old your child will be and what your schedule looks like. 5 days / week might get a slight discount, and infant rates are usually more than toddlers’. Finding a spot also depends on age and schedule because each daycare has a limited number of openings for each age range.

FAQs

Your family is unique to you, but some of your questions might not be. 😉 Here’s what most parents want to know when starting out.

What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be - especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care - so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools - we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. Click here to start the survey.

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.

More questions? Text or email - we’re here to help.

We’re online Monday - Friday from 8am to 6pm Eastern.
