Q&A with Ms. Carla

Tell us about your experience working with young children?

We opened our doors in June of 1996, so I’ve been licensed and up and running for 24 years now! I earned a Child Development Associate (CDA) and also an Early Childhood Education Associate’s degree. I am a part of a provider’s food program, where we follow USDA guidelines and are subject to 3-4 unannounced monitoring visits per year. I’m also an Early Head Start provider, from whom I’m also subject to two unannounced monthly visits to ensure I am teaching the kids what they recommend. Additionally, I’m a member of the National Association of Education of Young Children (NAEYC). So how did I get here? It began in high school, when I participated in a program teaching early childhood education. Even before then, as a little girl I’d always be playing teacher, taking the lead in taking care of the children that were around when we had company over. I decided to start my own program when I had children, because daycare was so expensive and working with children was something I loved to do and wanted to invest time into. I had experience, education (studying Early Childhood Education during undergraduate studies), a passion, and felt motivated by the ability to help my own children and the larger community of parents and kids. I love everything about kids, how can you not?! I love helping them build confidence in themselves and making learning fun. I take a lot of pride in building caring relationships with both the children and their caregivers. I value healthy communication and I strive to listen and not always offer advice! I am friendly, approachable, and have a deep knowledge and passion for the kids. I look at every child that walks into the door and see them as my own. I treat each child like I’d want my own to be treated. I want every parent to drop their child off and feel comfortable that their child is safe and well cared for. I put a lot of passion into what I do, and after over two decades of experience, I am proud of the program that I’ve built and the care I give to the children.

What are the key areas of focus at your daycare?

My goal is to provide a developmentally safe and inclusive environment for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children. I like to provide a stimulating, early learning experience that will help promote healthy self-esteem, as well as the childrens’ social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Ultimately, I’m helping prepare them for the long-term future and I take that very seriously. I feel that if they have good learning experience when they’re young, it’ll influence how they respond to education as they grow up. We make sure to have a lot of fun while learning! We have a play-based approach, there are no drill sergeants here. I am a patient, responsible, reliable, flexible, kind and humorous person and this translates to the children in their learning developmentally and with life skills. I put a huge emphasis on my interactions with the children, and I love teaching them how to interact with others. I enjoy fostering good behavior and positive attitude, giving them a lot of time to explore and discover so many facets of this new world for them. We love story time and circle time. It’s a time of great connection with the children. Everyone has an opportunity to express themselves, talk and answer questions about the story, or talk about the weather and other subjects. I’ve had kids who cannot sit still but during circle time always focus in! I try to liven up story time every way I can because I know how much the engagement means to the kids. I change my tone of voice, get out hand puppets, anything that will make it super fun and engaging for the kiddos. Afterwards we may pull an activity from the story, like an art project. I find stories to be the foundation of many of our days. I am big on encouraging everyone to participate in every activity, while also providing for their individual needs if they are unable. We spend time learning kindness, respect, trust, honesty, compassion, responsibility, independence, hygiene and manners. It is my duty to help the parents prepare their children for the rest of their lives! I do daily communication forms for parents, send photos throughout the day, and see most every day. I am confident that their children have a lot of room for exploration in my care while they are developing important skills.

Can you tell us a bit about your home environment?

The environment plays such a big role in the lives of young children. My environment is designed to ensure each child’s health and safety. I offer a wide range of age-appropriate toys and materials that encourage each child’s development, stimulates creativity and imaginative play. I feel wherever children spend their days should be a place where they feel welcome. My space is organized into various learning areas where the children play. My desire is that it is a space where the children feel comfortable and eager to try new things, test out their ideas and use their imaginations. Additionally, children should have the chance to play outside every day (weather-permitting, of course). Running, jumping, and skipping are good for them physically, mentally, and socially. I’ve got a fenced-in yard with a fully stocked playground outside!

Carla has been caring for my daughter since she was two months old, she is now 4. I have been beyond happy with the services we have received since my daughter has been in her care. The communication is impeccable, every day at pickup I am given some project or worksheet that they worked on that day. Carla always takes the time to go over my daughter’s day with me, and we work together to overcome any challenges. Whether it be behavior or potty training, she is always there to lend and ear or give advice. Carla is preparing my daughter for kindergarten everyday, she is practicing writing and following instructions. I know that I made the right choice in trusting Carla to help raise my little girl.

Carla is truly the best! Being a first time mom, the anxiety of going back to work was hard, but having my daughter in her care has been nothing short of amazing. My daughter is 16 months old and the compliments I receive on how smart and well mannered she is, just shows how much time Carla spends with her. Carla's patience and dedication to her job is what drew me in! She goes above and beyond for her families, and I would recommend her over and over again!!

We have been with Carla for almost 10 years. She has cared for all three of my boys and they’re each a handful. Carla has always been attentive, honest, and caring. She really takes the time to listen to your parental “wants and needs” and does her very best to accommodate families in any way she can. My children love her and we consider her family.

Carla is very caring and thoughtful towards my child and has definitely made a difference in my child’s life - she’s helped us turn my child into a smart little girl, she is now potty trained and knows her ABCS & can count to 20 by the age of 2!! She puts a lot of time and effect into each child at her daycare and it shows.

Rates & Openings

Daycare rates depend on how old your child will be and what your schedule looks like. 5 days / week might get a slight discount, and infant rates are usually more than toddlers’. Finding a spot also depends on age and schedule because each daycare has a limited number of openings for each age range.

FAQs

Your family is unique to you, but some of your questions might not be. 😉 Here’s what most parents want to know when starting out.

What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be - especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care - so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools - we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. Click here to start the survey.

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.
