Q&A with Ms. Susan

Tell us about your experience working with young children?

With over 30 years caretaking experience, I’d say this is truly my passion! I started working in child care when I was practically a child myself. During high school, I interned at Hogan Regional Center in Danvers, working with children with severe physical disabilities. It was hard work, but it was very rewarding to see the kids learn new skills and feel proud of their accomplishments. Once I started my own family, I began to work as a private caretaker for elderly people, who were often suffering from dementia. I’ve found that, regardless of age, many caretaking principles are the same: create a nurturing environment, figure out what works for the people (or children!) in your care, and remain flexible. While I think routines are important, I’m not a stickler for keeping strict schedules. I believe kids learn best when they feel seen and heard—so I will always shape my program around what works best for each child. People tell me that I have a gift for working with the elderly and young—and I guess it’s true. I just love teaching children, helping them grow, and watching them become their own little individuals.

What are the key areas of focus at your daycare?

In my program, the kids come first. I create daily schedules and goals, with the exception to adjust my plans depending on how the children are feeling that day. I want the children to look forward to coming to their program as I want parents to view my home as an extension of their own. It is my priority for the kids to feel safe, nurtured, and loved. ABC Grow With Me Playschool is also a place for children to learn and grow. I know that children learn best through hands-on instruction, play and of course and mostly patience. Our days are filled with immersive activities, ranging from painting to storytelling, and more! One of our favorite activities is caring for our herb garden. By helping to water the garden and watching it grow, children learn important lessons about responsibility, patience, nutrition, and beyond! At ABC Grow With Me Playschool, we are a family, and children are cared for in a small environment with lots of one-on-one attention. Welcoming children of all ages, and I look forward to working with parents to create the best experience for the whole family.

Can you tell us a bit about your home environment?

ABC Grow With Me Playschool is truly a ‘home away from home.’ ABC Grow With Me Playschool includes the entire first floor of my home. Throughout the day, we move between the play room—filled with games, arts and crafts, and other hands-on activities—and the quiet room with individual mats for naptime and books for quiet reading. It is my perspective that children will be in school or at work for the rest of their lives, so for the few years that they are in my care, I want them to feel safe and secure in a home environment.

A child must know that they are a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn’t been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like them.

Sue cared for my youngest son after school and full time in the summers. One of the things my son loves most about Sue is her creativity. Every time he goes to her house, she has a new activity planned! He asks me regularly when's the next time he can go to Sue's to decorate cupcakes or bob for apples. Personally, I love the fact that Sue isn't afraid to make a mess in the name of fun. She brings such high energy to her program, any parent would be lucky to work with her!

Rates & Openings

Daycare rates depend on how old your child will be and what your schedule looks like. 5 days / week might get a slight discount, and infant rates are usually more than toddlers’. Finding a spot also depends on age and schedule because each daycare has a limited number of openings for each age range.

FAQs

Your family is unique to you, but some of your questions might not be. 😉 Here’s what most parents want to know when starting out.

What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish service that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be - especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care - so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools - we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. Click here to start the survey.

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.

More questions? Text, email, or chat - we’re here to help.

We’re online Monday - Friday from 8am to 6pm Eastern.
