For Jennifer Nunez, opening Jenny’s Loving Home Daycare in Haverhill, MA, is a dream-come-true, decades in the making.

“I’ve always wanted to work with kids,” says Jenn. “I actually studied elementary education in college, but I had to change majors when I transferred to a different university. It feels right to now be starting a child care program, right here in my own neighborhood.”

Jenny’s Loving Home Daycare will open in Jenn’s Haverhill home this summer. The program will accept children ages three months to five years and will focus on learning through play.

“Building a career around child care has always been a goal of mine,” says Jenn. “And I really started thinking seriously about it after the birth of my youngest son.” Jenn and her husband have three children, ages eight, two, and ten months. “Since my husband and I both work, we have to pay for child care for the two little ones,” Jenn explains. “As so many other parents know, the cost is astronomical.”

“Plus, I was paying for something I wanted to do myself: be home with my kids,” she continues. “Opening my own daycare just made so much sense. I can stay home with my boys, do something I love, help my neighbors, and still support my family financially.”

Jenn says her experiences looking for child care for her children also opened her eyes to the need for quality educators in her community. “Many of the programs I contacted for my sons never even responded to my calls and emails,” says Jenn. “I want to create a child care program that parents can rely on. Loving Home will provide a weekly schedule and food menu, and I’ll update parents daily on their children’s activities and development. I want families to feel comfortable knowing that their child is well cared for.”

"It feels right to now be starting a child care program, right here in my own neighborhood." says Ms. Jennifer about opening a home daycare in Haverhill, MA.

Jenn is also excited about the program’s physical space in her home’s finished basement. “Our lower level is ideal for a child care program,” says Jenn. “We have a private entrance from the front of the house and a dedicated kitchenette—it’s perfect!”

But even with her passion, vision, and location, Jenn says she is thankful to have NeighborSchools as a partner in launching her daycare. As a NeighborSchools Provider, Jenn receives support navigating the requirements to become a licensed Family Child Care (FCC) program, regulated and certified by Massachusetts’ Department of Early Education and Care (EEC). All FCC providers are required to undergo trainings on childhood development and safety; complete a thorough home inspection (along with unannounced site visits) and three-part background check; and maintain current pediatric CPR & First Aid certificates. To learn more about licensing requirements, visit the EEC’s website.

“Working with NeighborSchools is really a no-brainer,” says Jenn. “When I first started looking into becoming a licensed Family Child Care Provider, I was so overwhelmed and confused by the EEC’s website and materials. But the NeighborSchools team lays out the steps so clearly, and they walk you through each aspect of the process. Thanks to them, I already have families on a waiting list!”

Through it all, Jenn says she is most looking forward to finally opening Loving Home’s doors to local families and children. “I love kids and their little personalities,” Jenn laughs. “You just never know what you’re going to get!”
