You know the saying “there’s an app for that”? Well when it comes to childhood milestones, phases, and big transitions, there’s almost always a book for that.  For some reason, a lesson coming from Elmo or Llama Llama holds a lot more weight than when it comes from us parents. So, as you prepare for the return to childcare, check out these books with your little ones and incorporate them into your routine to help ease the transition, and hopefully reduce separation anxiety.

The I Love You Book

Todd Parr

Unconditional love is explored in this playful and vibrant picture book that will comfort and reaffirm young children about their parents unwavering love for them.

$6.79 on Amazon. Or  $8.99 for the Kindle version.  We don’t know why anyone would buy a Kindle version of this, we don’t recommend it…

Don’t Forget I Love You

Miriam Moss

A reassuring story that illustrates the all too familiar morning frenzy of getting out the door and off to daycare and work. A helpful reminder to children that no matter how busy parents are, they always remember what is most important.

$7.99 on Amazon

The Invisible String

Patrice Karst

Specifically written to address children’s fear of being apart from the ones they love, this story utilizes a sweet and effective visualization to reassure our kids that even when we’re apart we’re always connected by love.

$5.79 on Target.

When Mama Goes to Work

Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch

When Mama Goes to Work

This clever story details what Mama is actually doing when she goes to work, and what the child is doing while she’s away. The reciting of each of their routines provides context to what otherwise is the scary unknown associated with separating from parents. The story displays confident children enjoying themselves while looking forward to being reunited with their mother.

$7.95 on Amazon.

When Mama Gets Home

Eileen Spinelli

A story that helps instill the notion that Mama always comes home, and even though she works and can’t be with them all day, she always makes time for her kids.

$6.49 on Amazon.

Llama Llama Misses Mama

Anna Dewdney

Your little one will really identify with this tale of Llama Llama going to preschool for his first time. Even though Llama is excited to start school, he gets nervous when he realizes Mama is leaving, but his new friends show him school can be fun!

$9.88 on Amazon

These are my top six right now, but I’m always looking for more.  Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
